DEVIZES

LOCATION AND CONNECTIVITY

Devizes is a historic Wiltshire market town, beautifully positioned in the heart of the county, just north of Salisbury Plain and within easy reach of Avebury, Marlborough, Calne, Melksham, Chippenham and Bath. Visit Devizes describes the town as being around 16 miles from Stonehenge and 8 miles from Avebury, making it a wonderful base for exploring some of Wiltshire’s most remarkable historic landscapes.

Although Devizes does not have its own railway station, it is well placed for access to mainline rail services from Pewsey, Great Bedwyn and Chippenham. Trains from Great Bedwyn to London Paddington can take around 1 hour 6 minutes on direct services, with Pewsey also offering direct services towards London Paddington.

For road links, Devizes offers good access across Wiltshire and beyond, with Bath, Bristol, Salisbury and Swindon all within reach, and the M4 accessible via nearby routes for travel towards London, Reading and Bristol.

LIFESTYLE AND THINGS TO DO

Devizes is full of history, character and culture. Its town centre is rich in period architecture, with an attractive Market Place, Georgian buildings, heritage streets and an 18th century Market Cross. Visit Wiltshire notes that Devizes has more than 500 listed buildings and one of the largest market places in the West Country.

One of the town’s most famous landmarks is the Kennet and Avon Canal, especially the remarkable Caen Hill flight of 29 locks, a feat of Georgian engineering and one of the area’s most visited attractions. It is perfect for waterside walks, cycling, narrowboat watching, dog walks and leisurely afternoons at the café. Visit Wiltshire describes the Caen Hill flight as one of Devizes’ three nationally known visitor attractions.

The Wiltshire Museum adds a rich cultural layer to the town, with award winning galleries telling the story of Stonehenge and Avebury and displaying nationally important collections. The museum states that its collections are Designated by Government as being of National Importance.

Devizes also has a strong arts and performance scene, with the Wharf Theatre, the Corn Exchange, live music, festivals and an ongoing cinema revival helping to bring even more vibrancy to the town.

SHOPPING AND DINING

Devizes has a brilliant mix of independent shops, traditional retailers, cafés, pubs, supermarkets and restaurants, giving the town a proper market town feel. Visit Devizes notes that the town has more than 250 shops, over 50 eating places and tea shops, 14 traditional pubs and five pedestrian only shopping precincts.

The town’s historic market tradition remains an important part of local life. Devizes received a royal charter in 1141 permitting regular markets, and weekly markets are still held in the open Market Place today.

From everyday essentials to boutique browsing, coffee with friends, relaxed pub lunches and evening dining, Devizes offers an appealing and convenient town centre experience. The monthly farmers’ market also brings local produce, artisan goods and a lovely community atmosphere to the heart of the town.

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Devizes is a popular choice for families, with a good range of schooling for different ages in and around the town. There are primary schools, secondary options and sixth form provision locally, making it a practical and well connected base for family life.

The town is also within reach of well regarded independent schools in the wider Wiltshire area, including options in Calne and Marlborough. This gives families a strong choice across both state and independent education, while still enjoying the convenience of a lively market town setting.

COMMUNITY AND LIVING ENVIRONMENT

Devizes has a strong sense of community and a wonderfully established town identity. It is large enough to offer excellent amenities, shops, healthcare, leisure facilities, cultural venues and events, yet still retains the friendliness and familiarity of a Wiltshire market town.

The town has healthcare facilities, dentists, a library, sports centre, theatre, museum, clubs, societies and community spaces, creating a well rounded living environment for all ages. The Kennet and Avon Canal, The Green, the Crammer, Roundway Hill and the surrounding countryside also give residents plenty of outdoor space to enjoy.

Devizes has also been recognised for its cultural energy. In 2026, The Guardian included Devizes among reader nominations for the UK’s first Town of Culture, highlighting its historic landmarks, thriving music and arts scene, independent shops, galleries, museum, Wharf Theatre, Devizes Arts Festival and the Caen Hill flight of locks.

WHY WE LOVE DEVIZES

Devizes is one of those towns that offers so much more than first meets the eye. It has history, architecture, culture, countryside, canal walks, independent shops, markets, festivals and a proper sense of community.

We love the way Devizes balances heritage and everyday practicality. You can wander through the Market Place, explore the independent shops, walk along the canal, visit the museum, enjoy theatre or live music, and still have countryside and historic sites such as Avebury close by.

It is a town with real personality. From the Caen Hill Locks and Wiltshire Museum to its weekly markets, community events and beautiful Georgian streets, Devizes is a quintessential Wiltshire gem and a wonderful place to call home.
