MARLBOROUGH

LOCATION AND CONNECTIVITY

Marlborough is one of Wiltshire’s most attractive and historic market towns, beautifully positioned within the North Wessex Downs and surrounded by spectacular countryside, including Savernake Forest and the Marlborough Downs.

The town sits along the A4, giving good access to nearby towns including Hungerford, Calne, Devizes and Swindon, while the M4 is also within reach for travel towards London, Reading, Bristol and the wider motorway network.

For commuters, nearby rail stations at Great Bedwyn, Pewsey, Hungerford and Swindon provide services towards London Paddington. Journey times vary depending on the station and service, but trains from Great Bedwyn to London Paddington are typically around 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, making Marlborough a very appealing choice for those wanting countryside living with access to the capital.

LIFESTYLE AND THINGS TO DO

Marlborough offers a wonderful blend of historic charm, cultural life and modern convenience. The town is famous for its impressive High Street, often described as one of the widest in England, and it creates a fantastic sense of arrival with its handsome buildings, independent shops, cafés, restaurants and regular markets.

The surrounding countryside is a huge part of Marlborough’s lifestyle appeal. Savernake Forest sits just outside the town and is home to ancient woodland, beautiful walking routes and the famous Big Belly Oak. The Marlborough Downs also offer endless opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and enjoying the open Wiltshire landscape.

The town also has excellent leisure facilities, including a leisure centre, gyms, tennis club and nearby golf courses, along with The Parade Cinema, which has become a much-loved addition to the town’s social and cultural scene.

Marlborough is also steeped in history. Its charter was granted by King John in 1204, giving the borough the right to hold an annual fair and weekly markets, traditions that still help shape the town’s identity today.

SHOPPING AND DINING

Marlborough is a brilliant town for shopping, dining and browsing. Its High Street is lined with a lovely mix of independent boutiques, interiors shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants and well-known names, including Waitrose.

The town has a particularly strong independent feel, making it a destination for those who enjoy proper market town living rather than a generic high street. There are coffee shops for relaxed mornings, traditional pubs, smart restaurants and popular places to meet friends for lunch or dinner.

Marlborough College describes the town centre as having a broad choice of eateries and cafés, national retail brands, designer boutiques, quirky independent stores and a twice-weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Marlborough is exceptionally well regarded for schooling, which is one of the reasons it remains so popular with families.

The town is home to St John’s Marlborough, a highly regarded secondary school and sixth form serving the local area. It is also home to Marlborough College, one of the country’s best-known independent schools, set within a beautiful and historic campus close to the town centre.

There are also excellent preparatory and independent school options within driving distance, giving families a strong choice of education across both state and private sectors.

COMMUNITY AND LIVING ENVIRONMENT

Marlborough has a warm, established and active community, with the feel of a proper market town rather than simply a commuter base. The High Street, twice-weekly markets, local cafés, shops, schools, sports clubs and cultural events all help create a strong sense of connection.

The town has a thriving calendar of festivals and events, including literature, music, fairs and seasonal celebrations. Marlborough College notes that the town enjoys a varied cultural life, including annual festivals for jazz, science, music and literature, along with the Marlborough Mops.

It is a place that works beautifully for a wide range of buyers, from families wanting excellent schools and amenities, to downsizers looking for a vibrant town with countryside close by, and buyers moving from larger towns or cities in search of a more relaxed Wiltshire lifestyle.

WHY WE LOVE MARLBOROUGH

Marlborough has that rare combination of elegance, energy and everyday ease. It is historic without feeling sleepy, vibrant without feeling too busy, and surrounded by some of Wiltshire’s most beautiful countryside.

The High Street is a real jewel, with its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and market town buzz, while Savernake Forest and the Marlborough Downs offer the kind of outdoor lifestyle that buyers dream of. Add in excellent schools, strong road links, rail access from nearby stations and a brilliant cultural calendar, and it is easy to see why Marlborough remains such a sought-after place to call home.

It is a town with real character, where you can enjoy coffee on the High Street in the morning, a countryside walk in the afternoon and dinner with friends in the evening, all within a setting rich in history and charm.
